The 7-38-55 Rule
Hey hey everyone! It is Brandon Fong here again, and I am back with day two of my new commitment to do a Facebook live every single day. Yesterday was my very first Facebook live, and I'll be doing these every single day, with the exception of I have a rule that I'm allowed to skip once if something crazy comes up and it's not going to break my streak. But today I have some incredible knowledge to share with you guys.
I've been working on the finishing touches to the Magic Connection Method this morning, and I came across some really cool stuff that I ended up writing about and I wanted to share it with you because I think it is so, so important in today's world. And if you don't understand this thing called the 7-38-55 rule, this is huge. Knowing the 7-38-55 rule can make a huge impact on your life if you internalize it and if you master how to use it in your life.
So before I explain what that is, I just wanted to tell you a little bit about why this was so important to me. I believe that the secret to getting anywhere you want is through connection. And there is this study, the 7-38-55 rule, that talks about how communication is interpreted by other people when there's emotions involved. And it turns out that only seven percent of communication is the written word. OK, let that sink in for a little bit.
Only seven percent of communication that is understood is the written word. So what are the others? The 38 percent is tonality and the other 55 percent is body language. So now here's the crazy part that I want everyone to understand. In today's world, when we are depending more and more on writing written messages, we are depending on that seven percent. Only seven percent of a message is carried through the words, but when you send a text, when you send an email, when you send a DM, anything, all you can rely on is that seven percent.
So understanding this really puts an importance on you having the power to write more effectively. And once you understand how to write messages that are more effective, you can really get anything you want in life. I am weirdly obsessed with writing, copywriting, writing emails. And just understanding these small strategies that you can use to implement the 7-38-55 rule and understanding how to write more effectively can change so many things.
As an example, I am notorious for writing emails that negotiate for things. I've written negotiations to get a free nacho bar at our upcoming wedding, I've written a negotiation to get a free pair of shoes. There are so many things that you can get in your life if you ask and if you understand how to write more effectively and communicate with the written word more. The other point that I wanted to make, and so many people don't even realize this, one of the things that you can do to sharpen your written communication skills is studying something called copywriting, and so many people don't understand what copywriting is.
Copywriting is not, well it is but it's not, it's not the legal term of like putting a copyright on something. Copywriting is the art of creating messages that are designed to sell. So pretty much any ad you see, whether it's written or it's a video, those are all copy. And they're designed to basically get people to take action at scale. So once you understand the power of copy, it is what I call a first principle skill, because once you understand how to communicate with copy, you can leverage that to get to where you want to go so much faster.
Let me just share a few resources. Copywriting is so important. This is what people have been doing for years to create massive amounts of wealth. Once you understand copywriting, it's critical. This is "Breakthrough Advertising". It is one of the original copywriting handbooks, and you can study this. This was published in print in 1966, I think.
All of the principles still hold true inside of this book right here. Once you understand how to write copy, you can begin to scale your influence. You can scale the amount of impact that you can have on people and the amount of results that you can get for people. And also, once you understand how to communicate more effectively, it bleeds into the thirty eight and fifty five -- once you can communicate effectively, then you can move into how to express tonality and then how to also use your body language to communicate more effectively.
So the last bow I want to put on this part about effective communication is I want you to imagine if you're a salesperson. If you're a salesperson, you can only sell to one person at a time. But once you're a copywriter and you master the power of copywriting, you can sell and impact people at scale, hundreds of thousands of people, if not millions of people. And it's literally all around you.
Understanding this one skill is critical. So that is what I wanted to share with you guys today. And it's all going to be talked about in my upcoming thing that I'm releasing soon, the Magic Connection Method, which I'm very excited for everybody to get their hands on. But just understand that every single time you send a message, you are attracting or repelling people. And when you understand the 7-38-55 rule, you'll understand that only seven percent of communication is by the written word, so you can begin to put an emphasis on crafting messages that get people to take action and get them to move in the direction that you want. Hopefully that was helpful and we'll talk to you soon.
